Fresh magic truffles are a living product. Store them well and they stay fresh and potent for weeks; store them badly and they can lose quality or spoil within days. Here’s how to keep your truffles in top condition, how long they last, and how to tell if they’ve gone off.
In short: keep unopened packs in the refrigerator, where magic truffles stay good for about 2 months (microdosing truffles about 2–3 months). Once opened, use them within 2 days. Don’t freeze them, and throw them away if they’re slimy, mouldy or smell bad.
How long do magic truffles last?
| Product | How | Shelf life |
|---|---|---|
| Magic truffles (unopened) | Refrigerator | About 2 months |
| Microdosing truffles (unopened) | Refrigerator | About 2–3 months |
| Any truffles (opened) | Refrigerator | Use within 2 days |
| Fresh home-grown mushrooms | Refrigerator | 3–4 days |
| Properly dried mushrooms | Airtight, cool, dark, dry | 2–3 months, up to years |
How to store magic truffles
- Refrigerate right away. Put the truffles in the fridge as soon as you receive them. Cold slows down ageing.
- Keep them in the original sealed pack. The packaging protects against air and moisture; don’t open it until you plan to use them.
- Keep them dark and dry. Light, heat and moisture speed up spoilage.
- Don’t freeze them. Freezing and thawing damages the structure of fresh truffles and makes them mushy.
- Once opened, use them within 2 days and keep the rest closed in the fridge in the meantime.
- Store safely: out of reach of children and pets, clearly labelled and separate from regular food.
How to tell if magic truffles have gone bad
Throw truffles away if you notice:
- A slimy or wet texture.
- Fuzzy mould (white, green or black fluff).
- A sour, rotten or ammonia-like smell.
- Soft, mushy spots instead of a firm texture.
Fresh truffles are firm, earthy-smelling and fairly dry. Some colour variation is normal. When in doubt, don’t eat them.
Do truffles lose strength over time?
Psilocybin slowly breaks down under the influence of air, light and heat. Stored cold and sealed, truffles stay potent within their shelf life; after that, both quality and strength decline. For the most reliable experience, use them well within the period above.
Travelling or taking them with you?
Keep the truffles as cool as possible in the closed pack, for example in a cooler bag, and avoid leaving them in a warm car or in the sun. Check the local rules before you travel with truffles; laws differ per country. See our legal status page.
Storing home-grown mushrooms
Fresh mushrooms from a grow kit last only 3–4 days. To keep them longer, dry them completely (any remaining moisture can cause mould) and store them airtight in a cool, dark, dry place, ideally vacuum sealed. Our complete grow kit guide explains two drying methods step by step.
Frequently asked questions
Can I store magic truffles at room temperature?
Only briefly. At room temperature they age much faster. Keep them in the fridge whenever you can.
Can I eat magic truffles after the expiry date?
We don’t recommend it. After the shelf life, quality and strength decline and the risk of spoilage increases. If they are past the date, check carefully for slime, mould or a bad smell, and when in doubt, don’t eat them.
Can I dry magic truffles?
Our truffles are sold fresh and are meant to be used fresh within their shelf life. We don’t recommend drying them at home.
My truffles have a few bluish spots. Are they bad?
Blue-ish discolouration is a known natural reaction in psilocybin-containing fungi when they’re bruised or exposed to air. As long as there’s no mould, slime or bad smell, it’s not a sign of spoilage. When in doubt, contact us at info@awake-shop.com.
