Psilocybin Tolerance: How Long to Wait Between Truffle Trips

How quickly psilocybin tolerance builds, why re-dosing doesn't work, how long to wait between trips and how tolerance affects microdosing.

Psilocybin, the active compound in magic truffles and mushrooms, has a special property: your body gets used to it very quickly. That’s why a second trip a few days after the first often feels much weaker, and why microdosing schedules always include days off. This guide explains how tolerance works and how long to wait between sessions.

In short: tolerance builds within hours and is strongest in the first days after use. A common rule of thumb is to wait about 2 weeks between full trips for the effect to be back to normal. For microdosing, follow a schedule with days off and take a break of about 4 weeks after 8 weeks.

What is psilocybin tolerance?

Tolerance means you need more of a substance for the same effect. With psilocybin, it develops remarkably fast: after one trip, the same dose can have a clearly weaker effect for days. It’s temporary and goes away on its own when you take a break. Tolerance is also part of why psilocybin is not considered physically addictive: frequent use simply stops working.

How fast does it build up?

  • Same day: a second portion a few hours after the first usually adds little. Taking more and more on one day mostly wastes truffles and makes the experience unpredictable.
  • The next few days: tolerance is at its highest. Even a larger dose often gives a weaker, flatter experience.
  • After about 1–2 weeks: for most people sensitivity is largely back to normal.

Everyone is different; use these as guidelines, not exact rules.

How long should you wait between trips?

Time since last trip What to expect Advice
Same day Little to no extra effect Don’t re-dose
1–6 days Clearly reduced effect Wait
About 2 weeks Effect largely back to normal A good minimum between full trips
Longer Full sensitivity Many people prefer trips weeks or months apart, with time to integrate

Besides tolerance, time between trips also gives you room to reflect on and integrate the experience. Many people find that the most valuable part.

Don’t try to “beat” tolerance with a bigger dose

Taking much more to compensate for tolerance is unpredictable: the effect can suddenly be much stronger than expected once the tolerance has worn off, or you may still feel little and be tempted to take even more. It’s safer and better value to simply wait.

Tolerance and microdosing

Because tolerance builds so quickly, microdosing every day stops working. That’s why the popular schedules include days off:

  • Fadiman protocol: one dosing day, two days off.
  • Stamets protocol: four days on, three days off.

After about 8 weeks of microdosing, take a break of around 4 weeks. Don’t increase your microdose to compensate. See our complete microdosing guide.

Cross-tolerance

Psilocybin shares tolerance with some other classic psychedelics, such as LSD. Taking one can reduce the effect of the other for a while. Combining substances is not recommended in any case.

Frequently asked questions

I took truffles last weekend and felt little this time. Are they weaker?

Most likely it’s tolerance. Wait about two weeks and try again with one well-chosen dose. Also see why you might not feel anything.

Can I take truffles two days in a row?

You can, but the second day will usually be much weaker. We recommend leaving at least two weeks between full trips.

Does tolerance affect a microdose after a full trip?

Yes. After a trip, a microdose will have even less effect for a while. Pause microdosing for about two weeks after a full trip.
