“How long will I be tripping?” is one of the first questions people ask, and a smart one: knowing the timeline helps you plan a safe day and stay calm when things change. Here’s what a typical magic truffle experience looks like, from the first bite to the afterglow.
In short: effects usually start after 20–60 minutes, peak in the second and third hour, and fade after 4–6 hours in total. Many people feel a positive “afterglow” for one or two days. Plan a full day without obligations.
The magic truffle timeline
| Time after eating | Phase | What you may notice |
|---|---|---|
| 0 – 20/60 min | Onset | Little at first. Then restlessness, giggles, warmth or chills, yawning, sometimes slight nausea or dizziness. |
| ~1 – 3 hours | Peak | The strongest phase: brighter colours, patterns, a different sense of time and space, intense emotions and insights. |
| ~3 – 5 hours | Plateau and come-down | Effects gradually soften. Often a reflective, peaceful and talkative phase. |
| ~4 – 6 hours | Back to baseline | Most effects are gone. You may feel tired, calm or a bit “open”. |
| 1 – 2 days | Afterglow | Many people feel calmer, happier and clearer. |
These times are typical, not exact. Your experience can be shorter or longer.
What affects how long a trip lasts?
- Dose: a higher dose usually means a stronger and somewhat longer experience. See our dosage guide.
- Variety: Hollandia is much stronger than Mexicana, which also affects how long the peak feels.
- Chewing vs. swallowing: chewing well releases the active compounds faster. Swallowed whole, it takes longer before you notice anything.
- Your stomach: on an empty or light stomach effects come on faster; after a heavy meal they come slower and can be less predictable.
- Body weight and sensitivity: everyone metabolises psilocybin differently.
Don’t top up too early
The most common mistake is thinking “it’s not working” after 30 minutes and taking more. Then both portions kick in together and the trip becomes much stronger than intended. Wait at least 90 minutes before deciding whether to take a little more, and as a beginner preferably don’t top up at all.
How to plan your day
- Choose a day off with no work, appointments or responsibilities, and keep the evening free too.
- Start in the late morning or early afternoon, so you come down well before bedtime.
- Never drive, cycle in traffic or operate machinery during the experience, and not until you feel completely normal again.
- Have water, light snacks, music and a comfortable place ready. Read how to prepare for your first trip.
The afterglow and the days after
After the acute effects, many people experience an afterglow: a lifted mood, calm and clarity for one or two days, and sometimes a changed perspective that lasts weeks, especially when you take time to reflect, journal or talk about it. Some people feel a bit tired or have a mild headache the next day. Sleep, water and a quiet day help.
How long does a microdose last?
A microdose doesn’t cause a trip. Any subtle effect on mood or focus usually lasts for the day. That’s why microdosing protocols include days off. See our microdosing guide.
Frequently asked questions
How long until magic truffles kick in?
Usually 20 to 60 minutes after eating. On a full stomach or when swallowed without chewing, it can take longer.
Can I stop a trip once it has started?
No, you can’t switch it off, but it always wears off. If it gets difficult, changing the setting, music or company helps a lot. Read what to do during a difficult trip.
Can I sleep after a truffle trip?
Yes. Once the effects have faded most people sleep fine, sometimes after a slightly restless start. Avoid starting late in the day.
