Your First Magic Truffle Trip: How to Prepare (Set, Setting & Safety)

Everything to prepare for a safe, positive first magic truffle experience: mindset, place, trip sitter, dose, what to expect and integration.

A magic truffle experience is shaped for a large part before you even take the first bite. Your mindset, the place you’re in and the people around you (“set and setting”) make the difference between a beautiful, meaningful day and an uncomfortable one. This guide walks you through the preparation, the day itself and the days after.

In short: pick a free day and a safe, familiar place, start with a low dose of a mild variety, have a sober trip sitter if it’s your first time, don’t mix with alcohol or other substances, and give yourself time afterwards to reflect.

1. Set: prepare your mindset

  • Feel stable. Choose a moment when you feel reasonably calm and well. Don’t use truffles to escape a crisis.
  • Set an intention. What would you like to get out of it: fun with friends, creativity, reflection, connection? A clear intention gives the experience direction.
  • Know what to expect. Read about the effects and the dose beforehand. See our dosage guide.
  • Accept that it can get intense. Difficult emotions can come up. Remind yourself: it’s temporary, and you’ve taken a substance that will wear off.

2. Setting: prepare your place

  • A calm, safe and familiar environment, such as your living room or a quiet spot in nature, where you won’t be disturbed.
  • Tidy up and create a comfortable space: blankets, cushions, soft lighting.
  • Prepare music, drawing materials or a journal.
  • Have water and light snacks within reach (fruit, nuts, dark chocolate).
  • Clear your day. No work, no appointments, no driving. Count on 4–6 hours plus time to come down.

3. Choose your company: the trip sitter

Especially for a first time or a higher dose, we recommend a trip sitter: someone you trust who stays sober, keeps an eye on things and can reassure you. If you take truffles in a group, make sure everyone is comfortable with each other and agree beforehand on how you’ll look after one another.

4. Choose your dose and variety

Beginners do best with a low dose of a mild variety such as Mexicana (2.5/5). Take the full portion at once and don’t top up the first time. Experienced users can opt for a mid or higher dose or a stronger variety like Atlantis or Hollandia.

Beginner Experienced
Solo Low dose, safe place, preferably a trip sitter. Calm activities: music, drawing. Mid or higher dose. Introspective activities: journaling, meditation.
Group Low dose with trusted friends. Gentle music, conversations, guided meditation. Mid or higher dose; an experienced guide is recommended. More structured group activities.

5. The day itself: what to expect

  • The come-up (20–60 minutes): you may feel restless, giggly, warm or slightly nauseous. Dizziness or a bit of nausea is normal; breathe calmly, drink some water or eat something small.
  • The peak: brighter colours, patterns with your eyes closed, a different sense of time and space, stronger emotions, and often a sense of wonder and connection.
  • The come-down: effects slowly fade. Many people feel peaceful and reflective.

If it gets difficult

  • Change something: other music, a different room, lights on or off, step outside for fresh air.
  • Focus on your breathing and remind yourself that it will pass.
  • Talk to your trip sitter.
  • Don’t take anything else to “fix” it.

6. Afterwards: integration

The days after a trip are part of the experience. Many people feel calmer, happier or more motivated for a day or two (the “afterglow”). Take time to write down what you experienced and think about what you’d like to take with you into daily life. Talking about it with someone you trust helps.

Don’ts

  • Don’t skip preparation.
  • Don’t take too much at once or top up too early.
  • Don’t eat a heavy meal right before.
  • Don’t mix with alcohol, other drugs or medication such as SSRIs.
  • Not for people under 18, during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or with (a history of) serious mental health problems.
