Magic Truffles vs Magic Mushrooms: What’s the Difference?

How magic truffles and magic mushrooms differ in origin, strength, dosing, shelf life and effort, and how to choose the one that suits you.

Magic truffles and magic mushrooms are often mentioned in the same breath, and for good reason: they come from the same fungi and contain the same active compounds. Yet they differ in how they grow, how strong they are, how you dose them and how you buy them. Here’s a clear comparison to help you choose.

In short: magic truffles are the underground part of the fungus (sclerotia), magic mushrooms are the above-ground fruiting bodies. Both contain psilocybin and psilocin. Truffles are usually milder per gram and come ready to use; mushrooms are stronger and you can grow them yourself with a grow kit.

What are magic truffles?

Magic truffles are sclerotia: compact, hardened masses of mycelium that grow underground. The fungus uses them as a storage of nutrients to survive difficult conditions. They aren’t real truffles; they owe the name to their look. Truffles are harvested fresh and packed, so they are ready to use.

What are magic mushrooms?

Magic mushrooms are the fruiting bodies of the fungus: the part that grows above ground, with the familiar cap and stem, and that produces spores. A well-known variety is the Psilocybe cubensis “Golden Teacher”, which you can grow at home with a grow kit.

Shelf life About 2 months refrigerated (unopened) Fresh 3–4 days; dried months or longer
Effort None About 3 weeks of growing
Value for money Pay per portion One kit gives multiple harvests

Are the effects different?

Both can bring similar experiences: brighter colours and visuals, deeper emotions and insights, a different sense of time and space, and sometimes a spiritual experience. The difference is mainly in intensity and predictability. Because truffles come in fixed portions and varieties with a known strength (from mild Mexicana to strong Hollandia), it’s easier to choose the experience you want. With home-grown mushrooms, potency varies more per harvest.

Which one suits you?

Choose magic truffles if you…

  • want to get started right away, without growing;
  • are a beginner and want a milder, more predictable experience;
  • want to microdose with fixed, pre-dosed portions.

Choose magic mushrooms (grow kit) if you…

  • enjoy the process of growing something yourself;
  • want a larger supply for a lower price per gram;
  • have some experience and like stronger effects.

Dosing: don’t swap gram for gram

Because mushrooms are stronger, you can’t simply replace a truffle dose with the same weight in mushrooms. Always use the dose table for the product you have. See our magic truffle dosage guide or the dosage calculators.

What about the law?

The legal status of psilocybin truffles and mushrooms differs per country and can change. Check the rules in your country before you order. Read more on our legal status page and see which countries we ship to.
