The Complete Magic Truffles Guide: Effects, Varieties, Dosage & Safety

Our full magic truffles guide: what they are, benefits and effects, the afterglow, Mexicana vs Atlantis vs Hollandia, dosing by weight, protocols and do's and don'ts.

Welcome to the world of magic truffles. In this complete guide we explain what magic truffles are, what they can do for you, how the different varieties compare, how to find your dose, which protocol to follow, and the do’s and don’ts for a fantastic yet safe journey. This is the same guide every Awake customer receives after ordering.

Important: jumping right in? Make sure you read the do’s and don’ts before you start, to avoid unsafe practices.

What are magic truffles?

Psilocybin truffles, also known as magic truffles, contain psilocybin: a psychoactive substance that the body converts into psilocin after eating. Psilocin activates serotonin receptors in the brain, which leads to significant changes in perception, mood and overall consciousness. Good to realise: magic truffles can affect your perception and functioning to such an extent that they are not meant to be used within your daily routine. For that, there is microdosing.

The benefits of magic truffles

People take magic truffles mainly to lift their mood, experience an altered perception or, in some cases, gain profound insights. They are used recreationally, spiritually and, increasingly, therapeutically. The most reported benefits:

  • Boosts creativity: magic truffles can help you think more creatively.
  • Emotional relief: they can help you let go of strong emotions and feel better.
  • More open: you might feel more open to trying new things and rethinking what you believe.
  • Feeling connected: a stronger bond with people, nature or the world.
  • Mental wellbeing: magic truffles have the potential to support mental health.
  • Changes in perception: the experience can change how you see the world in a significant way.

The effects of magic truffles

Effects vary widely depending on the dose, your individual sensitivity and the setting. The most common effects:

  • Visuals: enhanced colours, vivid patterns and visual distortions. With your eyes closed you may see geometric patterns.
  • Emotional amplification: feelings become more intense; many people feel happier, excited and more positive.
  • Different perception of time and space: time may seem to move slower or faster, and things around you may look larger or smaller than they are.
  • Spiritual experiences and a sense of wonder: a deep, meaningful experience of connection with the universe, or personal insight. Everyday things can feel fascinating and you may feel a strong appreciation for nature.
  • Enhanced creativity: a burst of new ideas and connections you hadn’t noticed before.
  • Physical sensations: some people experience gravity differently and feel very light, or even as if they are floating.

After-effects: the “afterglow”

The acute effects of magic truffles typically last 4 to 6 hours, but the after-effects can last well beyond the trip itself. They depend on the dose, your sensitivity and the overall experience.

Period What many people report
Short term (up to 24–48 hours) A lifted mood: calmer, happier, more at peace, with feelings of gratitude, empathy and emotional openness. Clearer thinking, more creativity and a greater sense of purpose.
Mid term (up to a few days or a week) An improved outlook on challenges and relationships, and a residual sense of calm and reduced stress.
Long term (up to several weeks or longer) Lasting personal insights and changes in perspective that influence behaviour and decisions, especially when combined with integration practices such as journaling or therapy.

These experiences are subjective and differ from person to person.

How to find your ideal dose

The ideal dose depends on your body weight: psilocybin is distributed throughout the body, so heavier people usually need more for the same effect. Dosing by weight leads to a safer and more fulfilling experience.

Body weight Microdose Small dose Mid dose High dose
40–50 kg 0.5–0.7 g 3.8–4.7 g 5.2–6.5 g 8.8–11.0 g
51–60 kg 0.7–0.8 g 4.7–5.6 g 6.5–7.8 g 11.0–13.2 g
61–70 kg 0.8–0.9 g 5.6–6.6 g 7.8–9.1 g 13.2–15.4 g
71–80 kg 0.9–1.0 g 6.6–7.5 g 9.1–10.4 g 15.4–17.6 g
81–90 kg 1.0–1.2 g 7.5–8.5 g 10.4–11.7 g 17.6–19.8 g
91–100 kg 1.2–1.3 g 8.5–9.4 g 11.7–13.0 g 19.8 g or more

These are guidelines for fresh truffles and match our strongest variety, Hollandia; milder varieties need somewhat more for the same effect. Everyone is unique, so if in doubt, start lower. Our dosage calculator takes the variety into account. More detail in our dosage guide.

Do’s and don’ts

Do’s

  • ✔️ Do your own research: understanding the effects, benefits and risks helps you make informed decisions.
  • ✔️ New to truffles? Start low: also when trying a new batch. You can increase the dose in a future session.
  • ✔️ Set an intention: personal insight, spiritual growth or creativity. A clear intention guides the experience.
  • ✔️ Prepare your environment: tidy up and create a relaxing space with soft lighting or music.
  • ✔️ Stay hydrated and nourished: drink water and keep light snacks at hand, but avoid heavy meals right before or during the session. This also helps against nausea.
  • ✔️ Have a trip sitter: especially if you’re inexperienced or take a higher dose.
  • ✔️ Chew thoroughly: truffles are firm; chewing well releases the active compounds.
  • ✔️ Mask the flavour: eat the truffles with dark chocolate or another low-sugar snack.
  • ✔️ Journal (optional): write down thoughts, insights and reflections during and after.
  • ✔️ Integrate: afterwards, reflect on how to apply insights in daily life.
  • ✔️ Store correctly: packed truffles keep for about 2 months in the refrigerator. Once opened, use them within 2 days.

Don’ts

  • ❌ Don’t skip preparation: it can lead to an overwhelming or negative experience.
  • ❌ Don’t rush the dose: too much without knowing your sensitivity can be uncomfortable.
  • ❌ Don’t neglect hydration and food: but avoid heavy meals right before or during.
  • ❌ Don’t mix substances: alcohol or other drugs increase risks and cause unpredictable effects.
  • ❌ Not during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
  • ❌ Not under 18.
  • ❌ Be careful with mental health issues: if you struggle with serious mental health problems, consult a medical professional first.
  • ❌ Not with medication such as SSRIs: antidepressants and other psychoactive medication can interact with psilocybin in dangerous or unpredictable ways.
